Assembly GOP Caucus Asked to Demand Resignation of Assemblyman Devon Mathis & Move to Suspend Him Without Pay
Suspension of Mathis would be the first ever usage of Proposition 50
(Torrance, CA, Nov 15, 2017) – Following weeks of revelations about the sordid misconduct of Assemblyman Devon Mathis (R-Visalia), American Children First calls upon Assembly Republican Caucus Leader Brian Dahle to immediately demand the resignation of Mathis.
“If Mathis will not resign then we would expect his colleagues to suspend him without pay,” said Joseph Turner, Executive Director of American Children First. “It is time that lawmakers stop talking about accountability and take Proposition 50 for a test drive.”
Proposition 50 allows the legislature to suspend their colleagues without pay and was overwhelmingly passed by voters in June of last year.
Last night under the principled leadership of Chairwoman Mariann Hedstrom, the Tulare County Republican Central Committee unanimously passed a resolution asking Mathis to resign his position immediately. The resolution called Mathis “an embarrassment to his constituents” and referenced sexual assault allegations brought to light by American Children First in October.
“Republicans have an excellent opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to real reform in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal by holding one of their own accountable,” Turner said.
